An Evening in the Everlasting Bonfire
On August 3, at the University's Gallagher Concert Chamber, Hamiltonians get their first chance to warm themselves by the Everlasting Bonfire, and hear Carl Watkins' latest music creations. The former Daisy Chain Halo frontman has assembled a 12-piece orchestra, which includes a string quintet, brass section, woodwind, piano, acoustic guitars, percussion and voice. The collective has formed around the works of Watkins and features a number of Hamilton's top musicians, including cellist Yotam Levy, percussionist Trevor Faville and Looking for Alaska's Aaron Gott on piano, among many others.
As the instrumentation suggests, the works themselves are a departure from the heavy rock that crowds in the early 2000s became accustomed to when appearing for a DCH concert. The driving, intense and compelling aspects of that music remain, however the sound has spread out and diversified creating a neat sub genre that once again defies categorization. As always, "something different" was part of Watkins' aim with the Bonfire and, especially, to work inclusively with often disparate music genres. The concert on August 3 will not only bring jazz, rock and classical musicians together but, it is hoped, their audiences as well.
