National Youth Art Awards
The National Youth Art Awards was originally hosted by the Empire Gallery in Cambridge but with their blessing the WSA took it over to celebrate their 75th Anniversary. A small committee lead by Martha Simms raised sponsorship money for display fixtures and venues up until securing ArtsPost in recent years.
The National Youth Art Awards enters its 8th year and word is spreading across the country. Open to individuals 15 - 27 years of age this award appeals to many because there are many different categories that young artists can enter and no limit on content or media. This year 79 entries were received, well up on previous years, with interest coming from both the North and South Islands. The WSA feel fortunate to have Karl Chitham, Director of the Tauranga Art Gallery as this year’s selector and judge. Karl is passionate about what younger artists are doing, their interests and ideas and knowledgeable about what's appealing at their age and stage. An artist himself, Karl will have the daunting task of selecting a cohesive exhibition that will open at ArtPost, Hamilton, August 3rd. The Waikato Society of Arts regards this exhibition as one of the highlights of the year and are delighted to have gained excellent sponsorship and support from the Hamilton community.
Young artists gain confidence from both conversation and sales of their work and so we are looking forward to a lively exhibition that encourages and confirms their ongoing interest in the creative arts.
