WHAKANAKONAKO: Enhance and Adorn

The artworks in WHAKONAKONAKO incorporate innovative cultural reference points, from traditional Maaori designs and concepts relating to Kowhaiwhai, Tukutuku, Taa Moko, Uku and Kete Whakairo, to street art culture, digital tukutuku, light-box photography and figurative/abstract painting. These works explore cultural concepts and notions pertaining to time, place and space through the use of themes relating to the history, stories and values that are unique to the landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The combination of these artworks contribute to creating a dynamic exhibition of contrasting cultural and contemporary visual art practices, that enhance and adorn notions of Aotearoa New Zealand identity and culture.
