Exhibition – Crude Speculations On Spiritual Reality
Richard Selinkoff’s exhibition Crude Speculations On Spiritual Reality delivers brightly-coloured and attention-inviting paintings that draw us into their worlds with an illusion of plumbless depth and multiple layers, most with no real sense of top or bottom or left or right. Richard describes these as attempts to represent images of what is behind the eyes rather than what is in front of them – not attempting to represent objects in physical reality; what each looks like depends on who is viewing it and when.
Their broad, sweeping compositions enclose extensive details that interact with each other, and their use of reflective metallic paints enables them to change their look with changes in the direction and intensity of the light upon them. They never become tiresome and remain fresh and new each time we see them, whether in brief glances or extended gazes.
