Coaltown Blues - A Special One Man Play
“This is a tour de force performance by Chris Green, who succeeds masterfully throughout the play”
“Green is triumphant with a riveting performance of one man play” The Courier 2015
Born during the Depression and raised in a coal mining town north of Greymouth, a mature man celebrates and laments his childhood West Coast life. A charming and comical array of characters populate the child’s world: School life, The Pit, The Depression, The Second World War, Politics, Unions, Religion. All seen through the eyes of a child, relentlessly optimistic despite all the evidence of the sadness in the world around him falling apart.
Green has been performing his revival of this iconic New Zealand play with songs around the country since receiving critical acclaim for the first performances in Wellington in 2013. The play is an intensely personal account of Mervyn Thompson’s childhood which had been largely submerged by the controversy around its author at the time of Thompson’s own performances. That Green breathes new life into the work is obvious from the reviews of the first BATS Theatre season in Wellington.
“Entertainingly Insightful and Timely Revival
Nearly thirty years after its premiere, performer Chris Green and director Lindsey Rusling allow Wellington audiences to at last separate the content of the play, Coaltown Blues, from the playwright/performer Mervyn Thompson”
John Smythe - Theatreview 2013
“One Man Play a Kiwi Classic
As a solo play based on such personal memories, it makes great demands on performers in bringing the work from the page to the stage. Chris Green, does well to establish the many characters that pepper the storyteller's lives...His singing is sublime.” Ewen Coleman - Dominion Post 2013
