Artist Profile - Grant Simpson

Artist Profile is for Whangamata artist Grant Simpson, read on and find out about Grant's career as artist and lover of the Coromandel Peninsula.

"The dramatic Manukau Harbour of my hometown was a strong influence on my love of the natural world, a love expressed through art while at school in Auckland. Holidays at the beaches around Auckland including Waiheke Island as well as the Coromandel made me aware of the qualities displayed by nature and how they speak to the heart. “Awesome beauty, wisdom, and power can be seen in the natural environment, and even love can be seen in that we ourselves have been made with the ability to appreciate and enjoy these things.

Until 1998, I concentrated on my business career, but in 2003 a move to the Coromandel rekindled my desire to paint, and to make this fulfilling activity my livelihood as well. My first exhibition in 2005 at Harrison’s of Whangamata was a great success with almost all works on display selling on opening night. This encouraged me to continue to pursue art as a career.
Living in the Opoutere area I work from a home surrounded by orchards and farmland. (Look for the gallery sign just south of Opoutere Orchard on SH25). The rich Coromandel art scene and the area itself is a big motivating factor. The many artists working away in their home studios, the art trails in Coromandel and Mercury Bay, and especially the galleries headed by such knowledgeable people.

Aside from my home studio situated at 1065 Tairua Rd Whangamata, my artwork, both original and prints, can be seen at Bread & Butter Gallery in Whitianga, The Little Gallery of Fine Arts in Tairua, Heritage Gallery in Cambridge, and The Mobile Gallery in Mt Eden, and Art Matakana
