It’s Time To Vote In Your Local Election

It’s Time To Vote In Your Local Election

We’re going to keep it short and sweet.

It’s time to have your say in your local elections. Make sure that the people who serve as your local councillors represent you, and are working towards the future that you want to see.

If you are enrolled to vote, you will have already received an orange envelope with your voting papers, some basic information on the candidates you can choose from, and a paid-up envelope for you to pop into a local post box or ballot box. If not, then never fear, you can still cast a special vote- get in touch with your local council office to find out more.

Elected members make decisions that impact our creative communities. This includes maintaining and operating public spaces and venues, allocating funding for community events and initiatives,  and shaping policies and processes around public events. This can include museums, community facilities and services, libraries, concert halls and theatres, and much more.

Whether you pay rates directly as a homeowner, or through your rent as a renter, local council uses this money to fund things that support community wellbeing. Just what that means in your neighbourhoods, is shaped, in part, by your councillors.

So make sure your elected representatives represent you and your community.

Turnout for local elections has historically been very low, and who gets in is often decided by a very small margin. So your voice can really make a big difference.

Take the time to read about the values that potential Councillors hold, and share what you find with those in your ecosystem. Make sure that your friends and whānau have their say too.
