Help our communities share the stage!

Theatres are vital spaces for connection, creativity and community. The creative performance that takes place in these spaces enrich the minds and lives of those who participate in and/or consume it.

In the Waikato, there is an exciting opportunity that has been in development for a number of years with the Waikato Regional Theatre. After a wide range of community consultation, strategic consideration, and broad range partnership, we are collectively working towards the exciting vision that is the Waikato Regional Theatre. For those who are spending time near the river in the CBD, it is such a thrill to see the construction underway as this creative hub is formed that is just waiting to be activated and brought to life by the creative community and beyond who will have the opportunity to “share the stage”.

The next step in that vital process is an exciting opportunity for the right person – Momentum Waikato and the WRT Property Trust are looking for the General Manager for this new world class theatre.

“The role of Waikato Regional Theatre General Manager is THE opportunity to build a world-class door connecting New Zealand’s newest performing arts centre with the hearts and minds of people across Waikato, New Zealand and the World.

With the Theatre currently under construction and set to open in June 2024, you will be in charge of the start-up phase for a 1300-seat venue on the banks of the Waikato River and in the heart of Hamilton’s thriving CBD.

The inaugural General Manager of the Waikato Regional Theatre will have primary responsibility for delivering the ‘Share the Stage’ vision and the Theatre’s strategic direction, establishing the operating structure, budgets, and programming.”

This role has a great opportunity to help shape the future for this space, to consider how it connects with the rest of the thriving performing arts ecosystem in both Kirikiriroa and the Wider Waikato. To look at pathways for activating space with the community, to programme exciting and engaging content, and to collaborate with the sector and beyond to enable diverse and transformative activity to take place in this exciting space.

Performing Arts spaces of the future – like the Waikato Regional Theatre – become spaces that must: facilitate the presence of opportunities for cultural expression; enable participation in creative activity at all levels; and provide support for the growth and development of arts and cultural activity. With that in mind, Creative Waikato are working alongside the WRT and the wider performing arts community to craft a Performing Arts Strategy that will support and shape this exciting opportunity.

So, if you, or someone you know, might have the vision and experience to take on this exciting new opportunity, check out the link below for the job listing and position description and become part of the future of this exciting new performing arts centre for the Waikato.
