Regional Engagement Celebration
Every town has their own rhythm, its own flavour of creativity, with many hidden gems to uncover and celebrate.
The more time we’ve spent on the road this year, the more I’ve realised how energising it is to see creativity where it naturally lives. Some of our team’s favourite moments this year have come from being out and about in the region, travelling through all 10 districts meeting people in the spaces where their creativity thrives.
Seeing artists in their own environments is worth its weight in gold. You get to feel the inspiration behind their work, understand what drives them, and witness the impact their creativity has on the people around them. Being welcomed into those spaces is a privilege we never take lightly.
Part of our mahi is celebrating the incredible work already happening, and part of it is listening. Being present in these spaces shows people that we genuinely want to understand the realities of both the wins and the challenges of their local creative communities and see where support might be needed. Either way, showing up matters.
Throughout the year, we heard comments that really stuck with us. Things like:
“Stuff like this is so good for our town,” or reflections from the team like, “Finding gems in every place opens my eyes to how lucky we are in the Waikato.” or there is “amazing world class talent in our local communities” and “there are so many engaged locals who want to do cool things for their community”.
These comments say so much about the pride people feel in their creative spaces, and the joy that comes from someone recognising the value of what they’re doing.
Across the team, a shared highlight has been witnessing creativity at the source with a huge range of creative offerings such as studio visits, community gatherings, festivals, arts trails, workshops, and performances. These are the sparks that remind us why this work matters.
Your commitment to nurturing the arts through every artform, and acts of making, brings so much life and pride to the places you call home. We’re grateful to witness it, celebrate it, and walk alongside you.
As we look forward to 2026, we’re carrying those stories, those sparks, and all the creativity we’ve been lucky enough to witness in the region throughout 2025.
Here’s to more exploring, more listening, and more celebrating the creative heartbeat of our Waikato region in the new year.
