It’s that time again! The Hamilton City Council’s second round of the Creative Communities Scheme for 2024 is underway, with applications opening on July 22nd. For 12 years, Creative Waikato has partnered with the council to administer these funds, helping to launch creative projects that make a positive impact on Hamilton Kirikiriroa’s communities. While the application process may seem daunting and complex, it is well worth the effort. Successfully applying not only refines and improves your project but also provides financial support, showcases your creative practice, and helps your work shine in Hamilton Kirikiriroa.
With the average grant being $2,000 per project, many applicants vie for funding. The Creative Communities Scheme committee seeks diverse projects that encompass various creative forms to connect with the wide array of communities in Hamilton Kirikiriroa.
“The beauty of projects funded by the Creative Communities Scheme is that they bring people together. Whether it’s a small workshop where people learn new skills or a larger event open to all, these projects foster community. Some are one-time events, but many have grown to become annual fixtures in Kirikiriroa thanks to initial funding from the scheme. Access to creative experiences is a vital part of living here,” explains Adrienne Clothier, funding expert at Creative Waikato.
Adrienne Clothier has supported creative groups and individuals through the application process for over a decade. For first-time applicants, the process can be intimidating, but Creative Waikato offers support every step of the way.
“Creative Waikato is always happy to assist with CCS funding applications. We begin by discussing the fund’s purpose and whether your project fits the criteria. Then, we go through each of the five questions, explaining the type of information needed. We often hear the passion in people’s voices when they talk about their projects—our job is to help translate that passion into written words.”
Receiving funding can be a powerful way to support your community while showcasing your creative practice. The application process is an opportunity to refine your craft, challenge yourself, expand your offerings, and share your creative spark. Though it may feel time-consuming, it helps clarify your goals, methods, and connections with the community you wish to serve. By doing so, you introduce your creativity to new audiences and contribute to Kirikiriroa’s vibrant arts scene.
Here are three key ways the Creative Communities Scheme can help your creative practice:
- Get Your Vision Crystal Clear
Applying for funding can help to articulate your project’s dreams and goals, providing a clear direction for your creative journey. - Boost Your Creative Expertise
Crafting a detailed application can help to demonstrate your expertise and shows that your project is a serious endeavour. - Master Your Financial Planning
Creating a budget as part of your application ensures you have your finances in check, making your project run like a well-oiled machine.
“I always think CCS is a great way to start your journey with funding. You can apply as an individual, without needing a registered group or charity. There are just four questions and a budget section to complete. Even if you don’t submit your application, it’s a valuable exercise to think through and write down your project plans. It helps you identify what actions are needed to bring your project to life and what funding you may require. We love seeing new projects that offer our communities opportunities to engage with creative experiences.”
Have you started a funding application? Take a look and give yourself plenty of time. Most importantly, GIVE IT A GO! We want to see our Kirikiriroa Hamilton communities vibrant with creative activity, and we need people like you to share your practice and get your communities involved. The more demand we show, the more we demonstrate the need for funding and support for creatives of all kinds to thrive.
